Politics and poetry have a much greater intersection than just beginning with the same letter. Poetry is always political; whether it’s about national issues or personal experience. In collaboration with the Montgomery County Youth Poet Laureate Program, we delved into the depths of political poetry and its impact.

I had the wonderful chance to host this workshop with 2024 Youth Poet Laureate Emi Maeda, who is an amazing poet and thoughtful individual. We led a non-traditional workshop that allowed for open conversation among attendees about how political poetry & recent events made them feel.

Analyzing poetry I would not have been exposed to otherwise with other individuals just as passionate about politics left me with many things to think about and a sense of satisfaction.

RECAP: In our July Civic Workshop, we…

  • Discussed youth engagement in politics and fostered a lively discussion about solutions for low youth voter turnout

  • Learned about political poetry and its significance.

  • Analyzed pieces of poetry, including “Democracy Poem #1” by June Jordan.

  • Processed recent U. S. political news as a group.

Our July workshop created such a cozy space for conversation and opinion— I felt increasingly interested learning more about poetry while also discussing my passions of politics and youth civic engagement.

It was the actualization of the hybrid between politics and poetry— an event that brought the two together seamlessly just as political poetry itself does.

Political poetry is so important for our nation; it is a powerful tool that any average citizen can wield, capable of making impact and sharing opinion with those of the present, but also those of the future. It leaves a mark far past any of us.
