Complex Ballot Language Workshop

Last Wednesday, MasonVotes was excited to once again partner with MIC to bring an informative session on biased ballot language and the importance of researching ballots before Election Day.

Through small discussions and connection to real world examples, we each learned how to navigate the complexities and nuances of language and research so students can vote right on what truly matters to them!

One of the great discussions we had was centered around the 2024 Issue One ballot language, which proposed a citizen-led redistricting commission to address gerrymandering.

Through detailed examination of the title, content, connotative language differences, as well as poll and election results, students learned how critical clear and impartial language is on Election Day. Unfortunately, misleading ballot language can jeopardize the integrity of the vote. After curious conversations, we came to the conclusion that when citizens cast their vote based on biased wording and make decisions not independently but on skewed information, that wasn't considered a fair vote.

Next, we talked about the process of researching your ballot and how in reality, there are no perfect candidates. There are only candidates who most align with your values. It's difficult to start, but with some first steps and a simulation, our participants were ready for Ohio's upcoming May election!
