Are YOU Ready to VOTE?

Mar Snedaker

Hello! My name is Marilyn Snedaker and I’m the Vice President of Communications for Mason Inclusion Club. I recently was apart of creating the "Ready to VOTE?" Workshop in September, which was a collaboration between the Mason Inclusion Club and MasonVotes.

Planning the event and having a part in it was a new opportunity for me! Despite having leadership roles in the past based on social media outreach, publicizing this event to Mason students felt extremely important!

The turnout for students, from varying grades and backgrounds, was incredible! As we started the presentation, getting to explain the importance of voting was something I was eager to do. Growing up, my mom has always told me when my vote will always have an impact - even if it's just one.

Throughout the workshop, different MIC and MasonVotes leaders took turns debriefing everything voter-related for the upcoming presidential election. We went over registration, election day, the candidates on the ballot, how to fill out a ballot, and helped students create a personalized voting plan! The combination of the informative slideshow, fun ice breaker questions, and creative games led up to an engaging and successful event!

My favorite part of the workshop was finding out that almost nobody in the room was eligible to vote this election. Despite this, everyone seemed just as eager to learn about voting -whether it be for the future or informing their family and friends. Seeing people as young as 14 taking an interest in voting speaks volume. Being a junior in high school myself, I also feel a desire to be an informed voter despite the fact I won’t be able to register for another year.

Individually, I’m proud of the work I did for our publicity! By helping create flyers, social media posts, and spreading the word, we got a great diverse turnout. My work for this event felt incredibly rewarding.

So, are you ready to vote?
