Everyday, students go to school. Yet many aren't aware how the school board and government shapes their education. Many don't know how to get involved in their education and voice their concerns to those in charge.

Last Saturday, MasonVotes hosted our monthly workshop about the school board's role in education, encouraging students to brainstorm current issues and voice them to their school board.
Guest speaker Matthew Steele, a Mason City School Board Member since 2011, came in and answered various questions regarding his role as a school board member and how their decisions influences education at the Mason City School District.
It was great to see how eager students were to learn Steele's experience on the board. There were great questions about diversity, recent school expansion, and class size. One student humorously asked “whether he was in charge of deciding snow days”.

Near the end of the workshop, students brainstormed current issues and possible solutions in our education. This interactive activity really allowed students to address concerns that were important to them and think about alternatives.

For instance, one student was concerned about the lack of one services for students with language barriers. She was able to establish an action plan to get this issue to the administrator by the end of the workshop. On the flip side, there were lots of suggestions about changing the time the school day began to a later hour. Which is relatable, because who wants to wake up at 6 am in the morning?

It was so amazing to see the curiosity and interest these students had in their education system! Each of these students has the ability to make an impact on their community. And it all starts here. In education.
